Congratulations to Alex Popinga who was selected as winner of the
2008 Major Landers Scholarship, presented annually by the Iowa Bandmasters Association to a high school senior instrumentalist in the state of Iowa who intends to major in music education.  For the Major Landers competition, Alex performed "Il Carnivale de Venezia" by Briccialdi.

On her Lyric flute, Alex states, "I adore my Lyric.  There is no comparison between my flute and Yamaha's top model.  I first heard the flute being played by two flautists from Singapore and I thought.... I have the to have that instrument."

Alex Popinga is a senior flutist from Hampton-Dumont High School.  She was raised by grandparents Alan and Nadine Popinga.  She was a member of the All-State Band in 2005 and 2006. In 2007, she played flute and piccolo in the All-State Orchestra.  She has been a member of the NCIBA Honor Band for the past five years.  She has also participated in both the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) and Wartburg Honor Bands.  Some of her favorite flute experiences are from the UNI Junior Band Camp and the International Music Camp, where she played with the International Youth Band, Wind Ensemble, and Concert and Symphony Orchestras.  She is also a soloist in the Hampton-Dumont Jazz Band I, where she plays both flute and string bass.  Alex teaches private flute lessons on her own as well as at the Hampton-Dumont Middle School through Future Teachers of America.  She plans on majoring in Music Education and Flute Performance at the University of Northern Iowa.
